Florida Republican Accuses Obama Debate Prepper, Gregory Craig, of Teaming Up with Fidel Castro in Elian Gonzalez Case
If you don't remember, the lawsuit of Elian Gonzalez caused outrage in the Florida Cuban community before the 2000 election. Gregory Craig was one of the lawyers who represented Juan Miguel, the father of Elian Gonzalez. Here is the article from the Miami Herald:
Ghosts of Elian: RPOF calls Obama's debate prepper "Castro's former lawyer"
The Republican Party of Florida just noted that Barack Obama's debate prepper in Florida, Gregory Craig, was the lawyer for Elian Gonzalez's father, Juan Miguel, in 1999, which amounts to "teaming up with Fidel Castro's lawyer."
But Obama also has a tie to Elain's Miami family, which battled Miguel in court: Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. He backed Obama yesterday. And he repped the Miami family.
RPOF's Erin Van Sickle didn't mention that in heremail. She gleaned the Craig information/details from a Miami Heraldstory written a year after Elian was snatched by force by the U.S.government and returned to his family. The hoopla enraged manyCuban-Americans and may have led some who otherwise would have backed Al Gore in 2000 to vote for George W. Bush.
A year later, Craig said he maintained a cordial relationship withMiguel. That doesn't seem to make him "Castro's lawyer," but hey, it'scampaign season. And are people really talking about Elian any more?
As you can see from the article, the Republican Party of Florida did not call him "Castro's former lawyer," but only accused him of teaming up with Fidel Castro's lawyer.
Whether this is a fair attack or not is sort of irrelevant. Why does Obama have so many questionable associates in his campaign and history? Maybe this is why he favors talking to Castro without preconditions. He already has a connection to him (obviously joking, libs...sort of).
