Video: 20 Questions for Liberals from a Libertarian/Conservative
First the video:
There are no pictures for libs, so you'll have to listen. Before you go into Republican bashing mode, you might want to realize that the speaker in the video is a libertarian/conservative as I am who opposes the big government of the Bush administration just like most libertarian/conservatives. They abhor the kind of politics the Republicans resort to in the name of populism, like the housing bailouts. They also stand against socially conservative government, because it is just another form of socialism. However, the Left (progressives, liberal Dems, whatever you want to call yourselves), blind in its opposition to free market philosophy, commits even greater violations of individual liberty in its neverending quest to find government solutions to problems that no government has ever solved. The more power you give the government, the less you have. If you grant the government the power to grant rights, you also give it the power to take them away.
It would be a good exercise to answer some of the questions the speaker poses to back up your own philosophy. That is, if you have one beyond the Holy Trinity of anti-discrimination/group rights/identity politics, education, and healthcare/welfare/class warfare. Some of the questions are a bit simplistic, but the point is the same in almost all of them: name a government program that works efficiently at a level higher than the free market or charity-based programs and is worth the violent coercion necessary to appropriate taxes by force from its citizens, because, ultimately, no government program is free.
The best question was to name a country that taxed itself to prosperity. When Obama admits that taxing the rich might hurt the economy in a crisis, that just shows overall that it hurts the economy to tax the rich or tax at all, because it removes money from the free market and gives it to politicians to use inefficiently. Maybe that's another question for libs. Show how taxing the rich helps an economy when it's strong but hurts the economy it when it's in a "crisis."
Another good question is the idea that putting up trade barriers helps America. All it does is allow corporations to petition the US government for the right to steal from its own citizenry. I thought the Left opposed corporations who take money unjustly.
The last thing I am sick of hearing from both sides is how the free market and deregulation caused the housing crisis. The damned government created these organizations, which means they regulated them. They were shielded from competition by government fiat, and then the government has the gall to blame the free market. The government and its politician hacks are just covering their own behinds, and that includes Democrats and Republicans. We are all getting screwed in this deal regardless of our party affiliation, because we ultimately have to pay for the mess through more government taxes. The burden only grows. It never lessens.
